According to UN figures, appoximately 2 million Syrians need humanitarian assistance, states a Syria situation update from USAID. Figures show that 1 million people are internally displaced in the country, and more that 140,000 people have fled to neighbouring Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey. The report mentions the escalation in the fighting, namely in Damasus and Aleppo. This has displaced a number of people who had previously fled to Syria’s two main cities after original displacement from elsewhere in the country. With the assistance of aid organisations, authorities in Iraq, Jordan and Turkey are making preparations for anticipated additional influxes from Syria, whilst continuing to support current refugee populations. On August 11th, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced an additional $5.5million in aid, bringing the total amount of US humanitarian assistance to nearly $82 million.
